Politics 88 : Dukakis Wins Most Arizona Delegates
- Share via
PHOENIX — Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis will get 22 of Arizona’s 36 committed Democratic delegates based on final returns from Saturday’s caucuses.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson will get 14 delegates, according to state party officials. Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore Jr. did not get enough votes to qualify for any delegates.
Of the 38,000 caucus-goers who turned out, Dukakis received 20,000 votes to Jackson’s 14,538 and Gore’s 1,972.
The caucuses were the first step in a process that will send 41 Arizona delegates to the Democratic convention in July. The state has five “super delegates,” who are uncommitted at this time.
