Immortals Only, Please

Producer Dodi Fayed claims to have turned down Madonna and Michael Jackson for the title role in “Peter Pan”--because they may be headed over the hill!

Says Fayed, who started “Pan” preproduction in October in London: “When I was told Madonna wanted to be Peter Pan, I laughed. I just doubted whether anyone would know her in a few years. I wouldn’t use Michael Jackson now either because I think there’s a real danger he won’t be popular in a few years.”

Fayed plans to make the live-action film sans songs for $12 million, although “Dustin Hoffman will bring the budget up to $16 million if he plays Captain Hook. Dustin wants to do a film he can take his kids to,” Fayed said, but negotiations have been slowed by Hoffman’s other projects.

“I’m not worried, because reps for Mel Gibson and Robin Williams have asked me about them playing Captain Hook, and they’re both coming off big hits.”

However, Gibson’s agent denies ever contacting Fayed. And Williams’ manager tells us he’s unaware of the project--but said he’d look at a script, if it was good.

Reps for Madonna and Jackson had not returned our calls at press time.

Fayed added that “Pan” was developed at Disney, which “decided not to move ahead when I asked them to keep their animated ‘Peter Pan’ from being re-released later this year. They’re not thrilled that I’m doing the picture. I’m still trying to talk with them (about a distribution deal), but they won’t return my calls.”
