Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Shots Fired at Officer; 2 Teen-Agers Arrested

Police arrested two Santa Ana teen-agers early Friday after the pair allegedly were involved in firing shots at an officer, authorities said.

Arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer were Gilbert Nunez, 19, and a 17-year-old boy whose name was withheld because of his age. Nunez was taken to Orange County Jail, where his bail was set at $10,000. The other youth was taken to Juvenile Hall, police said.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Santa Ana Police Officer Earl Porter said the incident occurred early Friday when Officer Richard Bower responded to a report of shots fired in the 1300 block of McLean Drive and noticed a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo being driven with its headlights off. As Bower began following the car, an occupant leaned out the window and fired three shots at the officer, Porter said.

Bower pursued the Monte Carlo at high speeds until the driver lost control and the car ended up in a front yard, Porter said. The occupants ran away. With the aid of police dogs, officers found Nunez and the juvenile hiding nearby, Porter said.

Police also recovered a .22-caliber handgun near the site of the shooting, Porter said. An investigation is continuing.
