New Bridge in New York Replaces Collapsed Span

ALBANY, N.Y. — The final span of a new highway bridge over Schoharie Creek opened on Saturday, allowing traffic to flow normally on Interstate 90 for the first time since the old bridge collapsed nearly 14 months ago, killing 10 people.
Alternate lanes of the two-lane span will have to be closed later to finish painting, a spokesman said. Traffic in both directions had been carried by the southern span of the bridge since December.
The April 5, 1987, collapse was blamed on erosion around the footing of the bridge piers, which shifted and caused the steel and concrete structure to tumble into the flood-swollen creek.
