Major League Baseball Roundup : Scott Beats Pirates for 6th in Row

It was the first time in his 10-year career that Houston Astros pitcher Mike Scott had finished a complete game wearing street clothes and leather loafers.
Scott pitched a four-hitter for his sixth victory without a defeat--the longest winning streak of his career--as the Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-0, Monday night in a game called by rain and wind after 8 1/2 innings at Pittsburgh.
“I was glad it was called because it’s hard to play with 500 pieces of paper blowing around you,” Scott said, referring to the 50-m.p.h gusts that accompanied a sudden thunderstorm. “It wasn’t easy to field, either, because you don’t know what to pick up.
“Those winds came--they were as strong as anything I felt in Candlestick Park with the (San Francisco) Giants--and I felt we were going to blow to Kansas.”
Scott struck out four and walked three. He left for a pinch-hitter in the top of the ninth but received credit for a complete game and a shutout when the storm hit and the game was called after a wait of 1 hour 15 minutes.
The Astros, who won for the sixth time in their last seven games, lead the Dodgers by two games in the National League West.
Cincinnati 8, St. Louis 3--Dennis Rasmussen snapped his three-game losing streak, and Lloyd McClendon hit his first home run of the season as the Reds downed the Cardinals at St. Louis.
Rasmussen (2-4) had not won since April 19, when he shut out San Francisco on four hits. The left-hander lasted 5 innings before the Cardinals knocked him out with a three-run sixth.
Baltimore 7, Oakland 3--Mike Boddicker broke his club-record 13-game losing streak, and the Orioles won a third straight game for the first time since last August by beating the A’s at Oakland.
Boddicker (1-8) recorded his first victory since a 5-2 decision over Oakland last Sept. 4 by allowing just one run in five innings. Oakland’s Dave Stewart lost his third straight game after opening the season with eight consecutive victories.
Chicago 3, Cleveland 2--Ozzie Guillen doubled home Mark Salas with the winning run in the sixth inning, and the White Sox snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Indians at Chicago.
Chicago’s Melido Perez (4-1) allowed 6 hits in 6 innings.
Milwaukee 9, Toronto 7--Odell Jones pitched five innings of two-hit ball in relief of injured Teddy Higuera, and the Brewers held off the Blue Jays at Milwaukee.
Jones (2-0) entered when Higuera’s back tightened up in the first inning, and the reliever left with a 7-2 lead.
The Blue Jays came within 8-7 in the eighth when Rance Mulliniks hit a three-run homer and George Bell added a bases-empty homer, but Dan Plesac pitched the final 1 innings for Milwaukee to get his ninth save.
Minnesota 7, Kansas City 5--Gene Larkin’s two-out single scored Gary Gaetti with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning at Kansas City, and the Twins handed the Royals their ninth loss in the last 11 home games.
Seattle 14, Boston 3--Jim Presley drove in five runs, hitting a two-run homer and a three-run double, as the Mariners routed the Red Sox at Seattle.
Presley, Mickey Brantley and Henry Cotto hit home runs during a six-run second inning that chased Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (5-3).
