A brush fire blackened 23 acres near Lake Elsinore on Monday afternoon before firefighters from Riverside County and the U.S. Forest Service brought the blaze under control at 5:18 p.m., authorities said.
The fire, which burned for nearly an hour, briefly threatened structures near Union Street and Grand Avenue, said Cheri Hill, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman.
About 60 jail inmates assisted firefighters in controlling the blaze, Hill said. One helicopter, two air tankers and 14 fire engines were used to fight the blaze, she said.
