Many of the top high school basketball players in the county will meet Saturday for two all-star games at San Diego State’s Peterson Gym.
In the girls’ game, to begin at 5 p.m., Patrick Henry’s John Ferguson will coach the city team and Lu Ann Gores of Monte Vista the county team.
Randy Wright of Christian will coach the all-star boys from Division 2-A against the 3-A team, to be coached by Montgomery’s Bob Aguilar. That game will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $2.50 tor students, $4 for adults.
BASEBALL
The Milwaukee Brewers have drafted Larry Oedewaldt, a senior catcher at U.S. International University. This is the fourth time that Oedewaldt has been drafted. He hit .248 with 12 runs batted in this season and had a 2.42 earned-run average in 22 innings.
SAILING
ProSail, the first professional sailboat racing series, will hold its Western Regional in San Diego Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The San Diego event is the second of the six-event ProSail series. The ProSail format matches boats of equal speed potential on a near-shore racing course that can be seen by spectators. Judging boats will follow the competitors, calling fouls as they are committed and assigning penalties by using hand signals and flags. Depending on the severity of the foul, penalties will consist of the boats having to turn circles of 360 degrees or 720 degrees or be disqualified from the race. These rules will ensure that the first boat to finish remains the winner.
Racing will begin at noon Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. The event’s headquarters will be the Hotel Del Coronado.
YOUTH SPORTS
The San Diego police department and the county probation department are forming a sports camp league for the city’s youth. The Police Athletic League, a five-week sports camp at San Diego City College, begins June 22 and offers sessions in basketball, softball, swimming and five other sports. For information, call Dave Kruk or Michael Bunker at 231-9567.
