India has pledged to upgrade official ties with Israel, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said. Israel Radio reported that Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi met recently with Morris B. Abram, head of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, and promised that India will step up diplomatic relations in the next two weeks. Peres said he was not surprised by the report, telling Israel Army Radio: “It was supposed to happen a week ago . . . (but may) take another two weeks.”
