Peruvian police have captured the second-in-command of the country’s Maoist Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas, authorities said, in a major setback for the eight-year-old insurgency. Interior Vice Minister Agustin Mantilla said anti-terrorist police in Lima arrested Roberto Osman Morote Barrionuevo, 42, known as “Comrade Remigio,” at a house just 10 blocks from the presidential palace. Mantilla said the suspect was carrying false identification but that dental records and fingerprints were used to identify him as the deputy of Sendero founder Abimael Guzman.
