Norwalk : Shelter for Homeless Opens

The doors of a 100-bed, Norwalk shelter for homeless Southeast families have formally opened after months of preparation.
Originally scheduled to open in February, the Rio Hondo Temporary Home is one of the largest family shelters in Los Angeles County. It is operated by Stop Homelessness, a coalition of Southeast church and civic groups and five cities: Norwalk, La Mirada, Whittier, Santa Fe Springs and Pico Rivera.
The coalition, which is leasing a building at Metropolitan State Hospital, has spent the last five months renovating the former ward, making room for about 35 families. Area charities and social service agencies will refer the families, which will be allowed to stay at Rio Hondo Temporary Home for up to two months while searching for apartments and employment. The shelter’s funding is derived from municipal, church and private donations.
