The following list is a selection of summer programs for children; it is not a complete list of activities in Orange County. For many of the programs, class schedules, fees and other requirements are still taking shape. Interested parents should call to obtain definitive information.
THE FULLERTON ARBORETUM

Science Adventures (programs taking place at both locations):
Wet and Wild: Kids will work with scientists and do hands-on investigation of plants and animals with respect to their adaption and use of water.
Space Camp: Will focus on space exploration, astronomy, rocket- and model-building; make star charts; experiments on gravity and astronaut training; field trips to Los Angeles County Museum of Science and Industry and planetarium.
THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM AT LA HABRA

“The Musical Express” (an exhibit on music and dance). Introduces the young museum-goer to a hands-on approach to the different families of musical instruments from around the world. Includes a ballet barre, stage and a myriad of costumes.

OAK CANYON NATURE CENTER

Twilight nature walks at 7 p.m. with formal program at 7:30 (first week is Trapper Dan Family Guide To Outdoor Adventures).
Discover Nature program every Saturday; topic varies.

Mornings activities such as arts, crafts, ceramics, typing, cooking, self-defense, fitness, dance and communication skills. Afternoons include organized sports, swimming instruction, free swimming and movies.
Fee: $90 per week; if more than one child in family $10 discount per child

When: Eight-hour day, five days per week. June 20-Aug. 12 (one-week sessions). Supervision from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Children’s Workshop: learning basic ceramic techniques and making clay dinosaurs.

Pegasus Summer Programs: Enrichment courses in arts and sciences for academically talented students from pre-school through 12th grade. There are several different programs starting June 27 and ending Aug. 24. For more information call 714-549-4201.
Summer Reading Programs: Full range of programs for all ages to promote reading enrichment, sponsored by UCI Reading and Neurolinguistic Clinic. Includes beginning reading, reading improvement, study skills and summer reading camp. Also ongoing program for children with learning disabilities. Classes begin July 5. THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AND SCIENCE

Micro Pals: program in microbiology. Study microorganisms in the Back Bay area.

Butterfly Program: mounting, preserving and framing of butterflies will be taught (limited enrollment).

NEWPORT HARBOR ART MUSEUM

Art On the Wall: teens will learn the techniques of mural painting. Working with the themes of California landscape and recreation, students will design and paint a mural on the outside gymnasium wall at Lincoln School.
Fee: $50

When: Five Wednesday sessions, July 6-Aug. 3, 9 a.m.-Noon
Classes will take place at Lincoln School, Newport Beach.
Building On Art: for every child who loved his Legos and erector set, this hands-on workshop will explore “the build environment.” Taught by a team of area architects, children will learn about the design and function of buildings and will have the opportunity to create their own designs for a new art museum building.

Ages: 9-12
When: Five Saturday sessions, July 23-Aug. 20; 9 a.m.-Noon
Creative Art Workshops (“Explorations in Drawing: Mixed Media” will be offered in conjunction with “The Figurative Fifties: NY Figurative Expressionism.”): Students will be guided through basic indoor and outdoor drawing skills. Some of the media explored will be pencil, pen, ink, conte crayons and oil pastels. Students will be given a supplies list at first session.

Brushing Up on Art: offered in conjunction with “The Figurative Fifties.” This workshop is designed to introduce various techniques in painting and drawing, emphasizing the figurative form. Bring smock or old shirt.
