A National City man was convicted Wednesday of attempted murder of a police officer, whose bulletproof vest may have saved his life when he was shot Dec. 26.
Raul Zamudio Cortez, 20, was found guilty by San Diego Superior Court Judge Kevin Midlam in a non-jury trial.
Cortez was also found to have shot San Diego Police Officer Scott Haney in the arm during a traffic stop.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Keith Burt said Cortez could be sentenced to a maximum 12 years in state prison.
Midlam set sentencing for July 13. Cortez remains in County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.
Haney stopped Cortez on California 163 near the Interstate 5 turnoff because he was driving erratically at 3:08 a.m. Haney was shot twice in the chest.
A SWAT team was dispatched to the 3500 block of 42nd Street in San Diego, to where the car was traced. Cortez was arrested there early that morning.
