Iran Says It Shot Down Iraqi Jet in Gulf Battle

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Iran said its jets shot down an Iraqi Mirage fighter plane in a dogfight over the Persian Gulf on Wednesday.
The Iranian news agency IRNA, monitored in Nicosia, quoted an air force commander as saying there was no word on the fate of the pilot and a search had begun. In Baghdad, an Iraqi military spokesman denied the report.
