Soviet Women Unbeaten in Basketball Qualifying

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Soviet Union remained unbeaten in the women’s Olympic basketball qualifying round Wednesday by defeating Bulgaria, 76-61.
Earlier in the tournament, the Soviets defeated Poland and Yugoslavia.
Against Bulgaria, the Soviets were led by Galina Savitskaya, who scored 18 points. Bulgaria’s top scorer was Bolina Tsekova, who had 14.
Twenty-four nations participated in the preliminary qualifying rounds in three Malaysian cities and Singapore, June 6-10.
Of the 24, eight advanced to the final qualifying round, which began Monday and will end Sunday.
Six of the eight nations will go to the Summer Olympics in September at Seoul to play against the defending champion United States and South Korea.
