Burundi Ruler Briefs Neighboring Leaders on August Hutu Massacres

GOMA, Zaire — Burundi’s army ruler, Maj. Pierre Buyoya, briefed the presidents of Zaire and Rwanda Friday on the aftermath of tribal massacres that occurred in his country in August, Zairean officials said.
President Buyoya met Zaire’s Mobutu Seso Seiko and Rwanda’s Juvenal Habyarimana in the Zairean town of Goma near the Burundian border.
It was their second meeting since an uprising by the majority Hutu tribe and reprisal killings by the army in northeast Burundi sent 60,000 mainly Hutu refugees fleeing into neighboring Rwanda.
Burundi’s military government says 5,000 people were killed but has rejected calls from members of the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament for an international inquiry into the slaughter. Press reports have put the death toll much higher.
