THE PREPS : Roundup : Nielsen Sets Course Mark to Lead Mater Dei’s Cross-Country Victory

Mike Nielsen set a course record as Mater Dei High School defeated St. Paul, 19-44, Thursday in an Angelus League boys’ cross-country meet at Irvine Park.
Nielsen ran the 3-mile course in 15 minutes 59 seconds to break his record of 16:08, set 2 weeks ago.
In Century League boys’ cross-country:
Villa Park 19, El Modena 39--Marc Sleenhoh of Villa Park won the 2.9-mile race at hilly Eisenhower Park in 15:10.
Santa Ana 20, Santa Ana Valley 39--Jimmy Rodriguez of Santa Ana Valley won the race at Irvine Park in 14:48 and Roger Nava of Santa Ana finished second in 15:31.
In Empire League boys’ cross-country:
Katella 18, Cypress 39--Shaun Nichols and Jim Thornton tied for first in 16 minutes to lead Katella (3-1) at Cypress.
In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:
Corona del Mar 15, Estancia 50--Eddie Lavelle broke his course record to lead Corona del Mar (4-0) at Estancia. Lavelle ran the 3-mile course in 15:54, 9 seconds better than the record he set last season.
Tustin 16, Newport Harbor 42--Larry Will ran a 15:31 to lead Tustin.
In Sunset League boys’ cross-country:
Fountain Valley 22, Edison 36--Richie Lockwood ran 15:49 to lead Fountain Valley (4-0) at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
In Empire League girls’ cross-country:
Cypress 16, Katella 43--Staci Carrington finished in 20:03 for host Cypress (2-2).
In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:
Corona del Mar 17, Estancia 40--Sharlyn Kerr finished in 21:44 to lead Corona del Mar (1-3) at Estancia.
Newport Harbor 22, Tustin 35--Kim Robinson finished in 18:04 to lead Newport Harbor at Mesan Park.
In Sunset League girls’ cross-country:
Huntington Beach 17, Marina 45--Natalie Adam of Huntington Beach ran 18:46 over the 3-mile course at Marina.
In Empire League girls’ tennis:
Esperanza 9, El Dorado 9 (Esperanza wins on games, 71-69)--Kassy Lundahl stayed undefeated as she swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, at Esperanza. Lundahl is 21-0 in league.
Los Alamitos 13, Cypress 5--Jennifer Shoudt swept her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, to lead host Los Alamitos (11-3, 7-1).
In Sea View League girls’ tennis:
Estancia 17, Saddleback 1--Liz Collins and Molly Romm swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, to lead host Estancia (12-3, 5-1).
In South Coast League girls’ tennis:
Dana Hills 14, Irvine 4--Christine Orcut and Heather Bolton swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1, for host Dana Hills (12-2, 5-1).
In Sunset League girls’ tennis:
Marina 18, Westminster 0--Thu Cao and Gena Gallanio swept their doubles sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for Marina.
In Empire League girls’ volleyball:
Cypress 3, Los Alamitos 1--Stacie Kosaka had 13 kills to lead Cypress, 13-15, 15-10, 15-12, 16-14, at home.
Esperanza 3, El Dorado 0--Jenise Webb had 8 kills and Joanie Jung 6 as Esperanza won, 15-3, 15-1, 15-2, at home.
In South Coast League girls’ volleyball:
Irvine 3, El Toro 0--Bev Oden had 12 kills and Melinda Norton 10 as Irvine (10-0, 6-0) won, 15-4, 15-3, 15-10.
In Sunset League girls’ volleyball:
Edison 3, Huntingon Beach 1--Aimee Achenbach had 14 kills and Leslee Briggs 8 in Edison’s 15-10, 3-15, 15-4, 15-13 victory at home.
