Community College Roundup : Merrell Gets 3 Goals to Lead OCC Victory

Pat Merrell scored 3 goals to lead Orange Coast College to a 5-0 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer game Friday at OCC.
Merrell, a freshman from Corona del Mar High School, scored 8 goals in 2 matches this week and has scored 21 goals for the season. He scored 5 goals in Orange Coast’s 9-0 victory over Cypress Tuesday.
Kevin Kynoch and Jaryd Winslow scored a goal each for Orange Coast (12-4-3, 4-0-2). Jeff Cova had 3 saves in the first half and Eric Anderson had 6 saves in the second for Orange Coast.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:
Fullerton 2, Golden West 1--Jeff Holcombe scored 2 minutes into the second half to give Fullerton a lead it held at Golden West. Carlos Miramontes gave the Hornets (5-7-2, 3-3) a 2-0 lead midway through the second half. Mark Merli scored for Golden West (8-6-3, 2-2-2) with 8 minutes left. Goalie Neal Grabowski made 8 saves for Fullerton. Rick Hollis made 11 saves for the Rustlers.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Cypress 0--Julie Baack had 6 kills as the Rustlers swept, 15-3, 15-8, 15-1, at Cypress. The Rustlers (13-1, 7-0) are the No. 1-ranked team in the state and have won 11 matches in a row.
In Orange Empire Conference water polo:
Orange Coast 9, Cypress 7--Tony Litwack scored 6 goals to lead Orange Coast at Cypress. Litwack scored 5 of his goals in the first half, as the Pirates (17-8, 7-3) held a 7-1 lead at halftime. Kurt Rudolph scored 4 goals for Cypress (11-13, 4-7).
In South Coast Conference water polo:
Golden West 25, Pasadena 2--Pono Faulkner scored 4 goals and Matt Mauser and Brad Smith scored 3 each for host Golden West (21-3, 5-2), which led, 10-1, at halftime.
