Former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos underwent surgery to help him breathe and was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman at St. Francis Medical Center in Honolulu said. Marcos, 71, who has been recovering from pneumonia, underwent a tracheotomy, in which a tube was inserted into his throat to assist his breathing and remove phlegm from his lungs. Also in the hospital is Imelda Marcos, who fainted and hit her head while accompanying her husband to the operating room. She was listed in satisfactory condition. A hearing is to resume this month in New York to decide whether Marcos is too ill to stand trial on fraud charges.
