Community College Roundup : Friedman Is a Hit as Cypress Rolls to 18-4 Victory

Jason Friedman had four hits and four runs batted in to lead Cypress College to an 18-4 victory over Chaffey in the first round of the College of the Desert baseball tournament Friday in Palm Springs. It was the season opener for both teams.
Friedman had a pair of two-run doubles for Cypress, which had 18 hits. Mike Neal had three hits. Brett Gregory, Steve Gill and Mitch Kaylor each had two hits and two RBIs for Cypress.
Jeff Patterson, a sophomore right-hander, pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out 9.
In a nonconference baseball game:
Rancho Santiago 7, Southwestern 2--Jack Bailey, a sophomore right-hander, pitched 8 1/3 innings for the victory in the season opener for both teams in El Cajon. He allowed six hits after taking a one-hitter into the seventh.
In an Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball game:
Riverside 61, Rancho Santiago 59--Carolyn Burns scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds for host Rancho Santiago (7-17, 1-5). Gina Shaw scored 28 points to lead Riverside (16-8, 3-3).
