LONDON — A man jumped out of a crowd and jostled Princess Diana today during a visit to a housing project for the mentally handicapped, police said.
Bodyguards grabbed the man and hustled him away from the Princess of Wales, who appeared surprised but was unhurt by the incident in Cramlington, northeast England.
Assistant Chief Constable Gordon McMurchie of Northumbria county police told reporters the man’s motive was not clear and that he was under arrest.
Television news showed the man lunging toward the princess as she shook hands with the crowd.
