Fleet in Transpac Race Is Off to a Fast Start

Fresh northwest winds Friday night got the Transpac race fleet moving earlier than expected, pushing the leaders 218 miles by 9 a.m. Saturday, 20 hours after the start.
The 20-knot northerly contributed to two withdrawals, reducing the fleet to 47, the lowest in many years. The Class A yacht Grand Illusion, skippered by Ed McDowell of Pacific Palisades, withdrew with a broken boom, and the Class B, Lear Jet, skippered by Samuel Paullin, Sun City, Ariz., retired with a faulty generator.
Lead boats in Class A were Mitchell Rouse’s Taxi Dancer and Robert Doughty’s Evolution,both representing California Yacht Club.
