Anonymous Theft Suspect Turns Out to Be Judge’s Son

HOOD RIVER, Ore. — A suspected car thief who sat in jail for 2 1/2 months, steadfastly refusing to tell authorities his name, has turned out to be the son of a Minnesota judge.
Authorities learned that their John Doe prisoner is really Brent Slattengren, 27, after Slattengren’s father, a judge in Minnesota, saw a picture of his son next to a story about a mysterious inmate in Oregon who would not reveal his identity.
Hood River County Sheriff Richard Kelly said that Slattengren, a graduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle, had disappeared April 19 and had been presumed drowned.
