New Zealand Closes Base in Singapore

SINGAPORE — New Zealand closed its 35-year-old military base in Singapore on Thursday but said it is committed to defense and security of the region.
Defense Minister Bob Tizard said New Zealand decided to end its military presence in the region because of increased commitments to peacekeeping and the high cost of operating the bases.
