The World : Massacre in Africa Kills 82

Rightist guerrillas massacred 82 villagers and wounded 111 others in southern Mozambique in their bloodiest attack in two years, state-run Mozambique Radio said. The attack, on the village of Sanguane, occurred Tuesday, according to the official news agency AIM. On Wednesday, President Joaquim Chissano announced a peace initiative aimed at persuading the South African-backed rebels to negotiate an end to 13 years of fighting. Later, after Chissano met with President Frederik W. de Klerk of South Africa’s ruling party, the rebels attacked troops loyal to Chissano near the South African border. “Dozens of people” were killed while others fled across the border, South African Radio said.
