Conductor Riccardo Muti and Austrian Cardinal Franz Koenig led a requiem mass in Salzburg Cathedral Sunday in memory of conductor Herbert von Karajan, who died a week ago at age 81.Thousands watched a television transmission outside the baroque cathedral. Guests in the packed flower-decked cathedral included Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, tenor Placido Domingo and director John Schlesinger, with whom Karajan was to have opened the Salzburg Festival in Verdi’s opera “A Masked Ball” later this week.
