Sixty-nine opposition members of India’s lower house of Parliament resigned to protest alleged corruption in the government of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Although it was earlier reported that all 106 opposition members had quit, 37 lawmakers who were not at the legislative session only indicated plans to quit the 544-seat house. The action followed a week of clashes over an official auditor’s report criticizing the Congress-I party government over a $1.4-billion arms deal with the Swedish company Bofors.
