CHICAGO — The governors of seven states have agreed to cooperate in developing programs to combat drug and alcohol abuse.
The Middle Atlantic Governors’ Compact on Drug and Alcohol Abuse was signed Sunday in a ceremony during the National Governors’ Assn. Conference by the governors of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Earlier, it had been signed by New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo.
The pact commits the states to a comprehensive regional project of information-sharing and training, developing a coordinated approach to drug abuse problems and methods in prevention and early intervention.
A spokesman for the participating governors said that later this week, District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry also is expected to join the pact.
