McMullen Tries Out With Lakers

Former San Diego State center Mitch McMullen will play on the Lakers’ entry in the Southern California Summer Professional Basketball League, the National Basketball Assn. team announced Monday.
The Lakers begin summer play Wednesday against the New York Knicks at Loyola Marymount.
GOLF
Susan Pankau of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, posted a 72 to take the first-round lead in the 14th Fred Sherman’s women’s golf tournament at Escondido Country Club.
Polly Hartley of El Camino is three strokes back, while Tana Figueras of Rancho San Diego and Shelly Tulao of Chula Vista are six strokes behind Pankau.
TRACK
Brent Noon of Fallbrook High, the national prep leader in the shotput at 69-8 1/2, will throw against world indoor record-holder Randy Barnes at the Jack in the Box Invitational meet Sunday at UCLA.
SWIMMING
Former Mt. Carmel swimmer Dan Jorgensen defeated his brother, Lars, in the 800-meter freestyle final at the U.S. Swimming Long Course National Championships at the USC pool.
Jorgensen, who along with his brother Lars compete for the Blue Fin Swim team, finished in 7 minutes 56.61 seconds. Lars, San Diego Section swimmer of the year in 1988, completed the 800 meters in 8:02.48.
Michelle Butcher, who attended Granite Hills High and currently swims for Heartland Swimming Assn., took sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle in 16:46.35.
