Irvine : Wilson Assails House Bill as Threat to Defense

Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.), speaking at a luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine before the World Affairs Council of Orange County, attacked a House defense appropriations bill that he said would gut the Strategic Defense Initiative and other much-needed Pentagon programs.
Projecting the “terrible consequences” that would result from a weakened defense, Wilson took time out from his foreign policy address to praise the peace efforts of a Fountain Valley second-grader.
Seven-year-old Tommy Tighe, who met with Wilson for a few minutes and was among more than 400 people to hear the talk, has printed up and sold several thousand bumper stickers that read: “Peace Please--Do it for us kids.”
On other notes, Wilson urged support for a proposed statewide ballot initiative that would raise $18.5 billion for roadway and transportation improvements through a 9-cent gasoline tax.
