LOYOLA MARYMOUNT (3-1) at U.S. INTERNATIONAL (2-4), 7:30, Golden Hall

Coach Gary Zarecky was encouraged when the Gulls rallied in the second half to pull within four points in an eventual, 97-87, loss to California Tuesday. But even Zarecky knows that won’t be enough with the Gulls’ upcoming schedule. USIU is still smarting from an 0-3 trip that started with a 173-101 loss to Oklahoma, which set an NCAA record for points in a half with 97. And now the Gulls play a Loyola Marymount team that set several NCAA records against USIU last season, including most points for a winning team (181), most points by a losing team (150) and most points by two teams (331). The records were set when LMU defeated the Gulls, 162-144, at Golden Hall and then the next week whipped USIU, 181-150, in Los Angeles. With Hank Gathers, who led the nation in scoring and rebounding last year, returning along with Bo Kimble, the Lions will likely look to extend those records and USIU’s four-game losing streak. The schedule doesn’t get much better for the Gulls, who play at No. 10 Arkansas Saturday and at Montana Tuesday.
