KABC to Caption Newscasts: On Tuesday, KABC Channel 7 will become the first local news organization to broadcast its newscasts with closed-captioned subtitles for the deaf and hearing-impaired. Many network newscasts are already broadcast with captions. KABC’s new Newstar computer system will automatically transfer the news copy into captions for the reported 1 million hearing-impaired persons living in the station’s viewing area. The station also announced that hearing-impaired viewers will be able to communicate with the Channel 7 newsroom by way of Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf.
