N.Z. Yacht Club Filing Race Appeal in Top N.Y. Court

ALBANY, N.Y. — A New Zealand yacht club that lost last year’s America’s Cup race to the San Diego Yacht Club will file its appeal next week before New York state’s highest court, club representatives said today.
Arguments are scheduled Feb. 8 in Albany before the New York Court of Appeals. Under century-old rules, the court is the final arbiter of disputes over the America’s Cup.
A decision could be expected by mid-April.
At issue is the catamaran captained by Dennis Conner for the San Diego Yacht Club that successfully defended the America’s Cup in 1988. The challengers in that race, the Mercury Bay Yacht Club of New Zealand, have argued that the lightly built vessel gave the Americans an unfair advantage and should be disqualified.
