A distraught man, armed with a small handgun, took over the 10th floor of the Department of Veterans Affairs building Thursday afternoon in Mission Valley, police said.
Police and SWAT team members arrived shortly afterward and evacuated the floor, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
“No one has been taken hostage,” Robinson said. “He went to an upper floor, broke the window and started to throw out computers, typewriters and other things.”
Sgt. Mark Foreman said Neil Shangold, 35, pointed the gun at another man when he got onto the 10th floor of the building on Camino del Rio North about 3:30 p.m. That man was able to escape and call police.
Shangold reportedly has a grievance with the Veterans Affairs Department.
