HUNTINGTON BEACH : Malfunction Shuts Down Police Phones
- Share via
A computer malfunction shut down regular police and fire department telephone lines for more than 12 hours early Monday, although emergency lines remained open, police said.
The Civic Center switchboard broke down at 12:30 a.m. and could not be repaired by GTE California telephone repair crews until 12:45 p.m., said Ilona Smith, a GTE spokeswoman.
“This is the first time that I can remember the phone system being out for 12 hours,” said Police Lt. Gary Davis, a 30-year veteran of the police force.
Davis said city officials are in the process of replacing the switchboard because it is an old system.
