Royal High survived Channel Islands’ late-inning heroics and posted a 4-3 nine-inning victory Friday in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
Royal’s Shane Hendrickson scored on a balk with one out in the ninth to give the Highlanders their seventh win in the past eight games. Royal (10-4 overall, 4-2 in league play) moved into a second-place tie with Thousand Oaks.
Channel Islands (8-6, 2-4) sent the game into extra innings by scoring three times with two out in the seventh. George Alvarado homered, Jacob Cruz walked, and Jim Davis hit a two-run home run.
Royal, in its fourth extra-inning game, took advantage of sloppy play from Channel Islands in the ninth. Hendrickson was hit by a pitch from Angel Aragon (3-3)--who hit four batters--and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sean Mitchell’s ground out moved Hendrickson to third and Aragon balked on his next delivery.
Tim Casagrande (3-3) pitched two innings of one-hit relief to earn the win.
