PLAY BALL! They don’t call it the national pastime for nothing. . . . More Americans play baseball and its little brother, softball, than any other sport in the nation. . . . The American Softball Assn. enrolled 226,000 teams in organized leagues last year--an estimated 3 million players. . . . Santa Ana alone fielded 190 teams, mostly slo-pitch, with about 3,200 male and female players taking up every ball field in the city six days a week.
