Republican attorney general candidate Dan Lungren scored a publicity coup with a luncheon fund-raiser that featured Vice President Dan Quayle as the celebrity guest and offered supporters who paid $500 a chance to get their pictures taken with the former Indiana senator. The Republican vice president spent 17 minutes before a modest crowd of 200 praising the former congressman for his conservative politics, his support of the death penalty and his promotion of federal legislation designed to aid law enforcement. Quayle acknowledged that it was unusual for a vice president to appear for a candidate who was not running for one of the state’s top offices. But he said Lungren was an exception because he is a personal friend and his race is in the nation’s most populous state.
