Leann Gonzalez faced the minimum 21 batters in pitching a two-hitter, and Foothill High School defeated Villa Park, 2-0, in their Century League softball showdown Thursday at Villa Park.
Gonzalez, a sophomore right-hander, struck out nine and did not walk a batter for Foothill.
“This had to be her best outing of the year,” Foothill Coach Joe Gonzalez said of his daughter. “She was really focused. We’ve been waiting for this one for a while.”
Foothill (15-8, 5-0 in league) scored in the second and third innings.
Shannon Ebert led off the second with a double to right, was sacrificed to third and scored on Gonzalez’s bloop single over the second baseman’s head. In the third, Melissa Weilandt singled, stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on Kelley Green’s sacrifice.
Villa Park (10-9-1, 4-1) had its baserunners erased when Tracey Colombo was thrown out trying to stretch a second-inning single into a double, and Jennifer Rawoth, who had singled to center in the seventh, was doubled up on a bunt attempt that was popped up.
