CSUN to Study Plan for New Conference

Bob Hiegert, Cal State Northridge athletic director, will be among a group of athletic administrators meeting today at United States International University in San Diego to discuss the formation of a new Division I athletic conference beginning in the 1991-92 school year.
Northridge is interested in the proposed alliance, Hiegert said, as a short-term solution to scheduling problems in men’s and women’s basketball.
“We’re coming just to find out what’s happening,” Hiegert said Wednesday.
Northridge is set to begin competing at the Division I level this fall in all sports but football. With few exceptions, CSUN’s teams will be playing as independents.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Northeastern Illinois, Missouri-Kansas City, Cal State Sacramento, Chicago State, Southern Utah State, and USIU are scheduled to attend the meeting in addition to CSUN. Youngstown (Ohio) State also has been invited.
