SHORT TAKES : 2 Features by Black Filmmakers Make Splash at Cannes Festival

CANNES, France — Two features from black filmmakers, one American, the other from Africa, made a splash today at the Cannes Film Festival.
“To Sleep With Anger,” a quirky ensemble piece starring Danny Glover, is set in Los Angeles and portrays the clash between old and new black lifestyles. It is U.S. director Charles Burnett’s first major feature.
“The film explores how people survive, how people treat each other, how much they understand from the past,” Burnett said. “It asks: ‘Is it necessary to let go of the past to live in the present?’ ”
A second black-made film, Idrissa Ouedraogo’s “Tilai,” is a fascinating and accomplished new work in Third World cinema, boasting high production values.
On a marginally higher budget than his debut “Yaaba,” which was well received at last year’s festival, Ouedraogo offers another study of life in his West African homeland of Burkina Faso.
