NEWPORT BEACH : 2 Teens Rescued From Side of Cliff
- Share via
Two Costa Mesa teens who climbed up a cliff in Newport Beach because they “had nothing better to do” were rescued by firefighters Thursday. Brian Sean Hawley and Danny Bougie, both 15, were trapped on the cliff off Galaxy Drive near the Newport Aquatic Club for more than an hour.
Firefighter Craig Chastain and paramedic Cliff Geddis secured ropes from the top of the cliff, near the rear of a Galaxy Drive home, and shimmied down one at a time to where the boys were trapped, about 50 feet from the base of the cliff. The rescuers tied harnesses around the boys and carried them to safety.
“It was a little precarious, I guess,” said Chastain, who rescued Bougie. “He was happy to see me.”
Hawley said he and Bougie had successfully climbed the cliff Wednesday.
