CITY SECTION TRACK AND FIELD : Washington Sprints Into Boys’ Finals

Washington High School’s outstanding group of boys’ sprinters took center stage in the City track and field semifinals, placing three finalists in both the 100 and 200 meters Thursday at Birmingham High School.

Behind Donovan Burks, the defending 100- and 200-meters champion, Washington dominated the boys’ sprint competition as the Generals hope to dethrone Dorsey as team champion in next week’s finals.

With the top four finishers in each heat or top eight overall qualifying for the finals, Washington looks to score big behind sprinters Burks, Sylvester Green and Jason Goss, along with its 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Venice, behind distance runners Julio Sierra and Danny Jordan, will challenge Washington along with Dorsey.

In the girls’ competition, Locke, the six-time defending team champion, again looks like the team to beat based on its long list of qualifiers.

Distance runner Rosetta Hunter, who won her 1,600- and 3,200-meter heats going away, leads Locke’s balanced attack. Dorsey, which finished second last year, will challenge the Saints again for the team title with its strong group of sprinters.
