MOSCOW — A gondola traveling above a Soviet city broke from its cable and slammed into a support pole today, hurling its passengers onto the roof of an apartment building. Twenty people were reported killed and 15 injured.
The accident occurred in the republic of Georgia, where the cable car system carries tourists through downtown Tbilisi and up the side of a mountain.
“One of the cars seemed to explode,” said one witness, Graig Line, an American photographer. “The car just disintegrated.”
