Neville, Mapple Win in Challenge Slalom

Karen Neville of Australia won the women’s slalom and Andy Mapple of Orlando won the men’s in the challenge round on the first day of the Michelob Dry Water-Ski Tour event on Mission Bay Friday. Deena Mapple, wife of Andy, was the top finisher in the women’s jump at 132 feet, and Geoff Carrington of Australia led the men with 184 feet.
Championship competition begins today with the freestyle event at 9 a.m. The final event of the day, the men’s jump, will be at 2:45.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Robin Rabello, a 6-foot hitter from Point Loma High and Sunday Renzema, a 6-1 middle blocker from Menifee, signed to play for Point Loma Nazarene College, Coach Barbara Rozendal announced. Rabello also played basketball for Point Loma High.
BASEBALL
Rodney Williams of Victorville High signed to play for Point Loma Nazarene. Williams, a center fielder/catcher, helped Victorville win the San Andreas League title. Williams will attend PLNC on scholarships awarded for both his athletic and academic abilities.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Zarina Galvan, a freshman at Grossmont Community College, was chosen the rookie player of the year by the International Tennis Coaches Assn. Galvan, ranked No. 1 in the California community college poll, helped the Griffins win the state championship in May.
