About Time He Learned That Life Isn’t Fair

Handicapper Bob Mieszerski says (June 3) it is unfair to the betting public when horses unseat their riders and get loose from the gate before the race and are allowed to run, because generally they run out of the money.
What is missing in this analysis is the bigger picture: What has ever been fair about horse racing, except for the fact that you will lose? Mieszerski, a professional handicapper using his expertise on a few horses each day at Hollywood Park, with a $1,000 bankroll, as of June 4 has lost everything but two dollars.
Mieszerski doesn’t back up his bets, and often they are on maiden races, the most foolhardy bet you can make. The morning-line favorite will more than likely be Mieszerski’s pick, one that will lose two-thirds of the time.
