Eight people were rescued Sunday from a 44-foot pleasure boat off the coast south of Malibu when smoke was seen coming from the vessel’s engine compartment, authorities said.
A passing good Samaritan boat took some of the people off the craft and the rest were rescued by a Los Angeles County lifeguard boat, said Lifeguard Lt. Russ Walker. No injuries were reported.
The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a cutter to the scene and was investigating the fire, which was reported shortly after 3 p.m., a spokesman said.
The boat, the “Quest End” out of Marina del Rey, was towed back to port, the spokesman said.
