Arizona State sophomore outfielder Mike Kelly was named recipient of the R.E. “Bob” Smith award in Houston as voted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. Kelly, a graduate of Los Alamitos High, has been named the National Player of the Year by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and The Sporting News.
Kelly is only the second player in ASU history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season. The other is Atlanta Braves outfielder Oddibe McDowell.
Kelly hit .376 with 21 homers and 82 RBIs this past season.
