SIDELINES : Kelly Named Year’s Top Player

ST. LOUIS — Arizona State center fielder Mike Kelly has been named The Sporting News’ college baseball player of the year, the publication said today.
Kelly is the ninth player from Arizona State to be selected for the award. A sophomore, he hit .376 with 21 home runs, 82 RBIs and 230 stolen bases this season.
Chal Port of The Citadel was selected the college baseball coach of the year. His team posted a school-record 46 victories, including a winning streak of 26 games.
The Citadel captured the Atlantic Region championship and earned a berth in the College World Series, its first in Port’s 26-year tenure.
