94 Reported Killed by S. Africa Border Fence

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The 39-mile electric fence on South Africa’s border with Mozambique has killed 94 people since it was built in 1986, the South African Council of Churches said Wednesday.
Refugee specialist Sol Jacob said that appeals to the South African government to switch off the 3,500-volt fence have gone unheeded.
South Africa erected the fence along a small part of the 280-mile frontier, reinforcing already rigorous steps to stem a flood of refugees fleeing Mozambique’s civil war.
