A 32-year-old East San Diego man shot himself in the head at his residence after fleeing a minor hit-run accident, police said Thursday.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, Paul Michael Burke hit another car at College Avenue and Meridian Avenue, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
After the accident, a witness followed Burke to his residence, a converted garage in the 5700 block of Redwood Street, officials said. The witness notified a police officer who was impounding a car a few houses away.
Police said the officer approached the house and heard a single gunshot. More officers were called to the residence, surrounded it, and attempted to contact Burke by telephone.
Officers entered the residence after midnight, Robinson said, and found Burke dead of a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head.
